Roar round out Pre-Season with victory over UQ.

Match Program Cover

Meyer scores (x3): Brisbane opened the scoring very early on with some confusing amongst the UQ defence with Kofi Danning playing in James Meyer to calmly slot it home from close range to make it 1-0. He quickly added another 2 goals to make it 3-0 after half an hour to round out a superb show of finishing from the local product.

Kids impress: It was a very young Brisbane side, but I was impressed with their performance especially in the 1st half with the system looking identical to that of the 1st team, which is the biggest compliment you could pay them really. Yes, they train with the 1st team reguarly but they looked at ease on the ball and were every bit as impressive as the few senior players on show.

Bratten injuiry concern: The 1 slight concern for the coaching staff from the game was probably the knock picked up by Luke Bratten after about half an hour. The young midfielder- who played in the Erik Paartalu role- picked up a knock and went down immediatly and was substituted for Kenneth Dougall. Hopefully its nothing serious because he will be needed this season with all of the Olyroo callups, + there is a spot at cm open with the departure of McKay.

Dominance of Possesion: I dont have the exact stats, but the possesion counter must have been 80-20 (75-25 at the very least) because Brisbane absolutly dominated possession with the 3 midfielders having a key role in this, with Bush and Lambadaridis always making themselves avaliable for a pass. In addition the 2 cb’s were very assured on the ball and had no problem playing out from the back, quiet impressive really. The concern would be that with that much possession (especially 2nd half) you should be creating more chances and taking them, which didnt really happen. “Roarcelona” seemed to become “Roarsenal” today because they seemed to be trying to walk it in at times.

Up next: Next up for the Roar is 2 weeks of training before the opening game of the regular season against the Central Coast Mariners on October 8. In the meantime I guess there is the annual family fun day which is always a bit of fun. That is next Sunday, at Ballymore stadium.
