Brisbane Roar announces 2012/13 National Youth League squad:

This afternoon Brisbane Roar and head coach John Sime have announced the clubs National Youth League (NYL) roster for season 2012-13. If you haven’t seen the squad yet here it is:

Coach: John Sime.

Goalkeepers: Nicholas Tubbs, Fraser Chalmers.
Defenders: Jason Geria ©, Corey Brown, Lachlan Jackson, Cameron Cresanti.
Midfielders: Ross Archibald (vc), George Lambadaridis, Ben Liftin.
Forwards: Nick Fitzgerald, Kwame Yeboah, Jordan Lambi, Brandon Borrello, Patrick Theodore.

Amongst the goalkeepers last season’s #1 Matt Acton has been promoted to the 1st team squad while backup Nathan Eccles hasn’t made the grade this year. In their place come Nick Tubbs who I believe has been part of the squad previously. Not really sure who Fraser Chalmers is- or which will be the preferred #1. I think it’s a safe bet however to assume Acton will be playing at least some of the games this year in order to keep his match fitness similar to how Andrew Redmayne was used last year.

The defence will be headlined by Captain Jason Geria –who imo at least was unlucky not to be apart of the 1st teams squad- and youth national team player Corey Brown. Jackson has featured last season in a few of the games, however this is the 1st time he’s been apart of the squad. Not sure who Cameron Cresanti is but he’ll likely be the backup. 1st team players Jack Hingert and James Donachie will also likely play NYL most weeks given they’re unlikely to be regulars unless there’s an injury.

In midfield George Lambadaridis appears to be the creative link in the middle with fellow returnee Ross Archibald also likely to play regularly in a deeper lying role. I don’t see it with Archibald but clearly someone at the Roar does. Im not sure who Ben Liftin is- or why they’ve only got 3 midfielders but whatever, I assume somebody from the 1st team will play down most weeks with Brattan the likely candidate right now or possibly even Rocky Visconte.

Upfront last years revelation Nick Fitzgerald will likely be a regular on the left flank if he’s not in the 1st team squad with pre-season standout Kwame Yeboah also likely to form part of the front 3. Scorer at Rochedale Brandon Borrello is also likely to feature regularly at #9. Again not sure who Jordan Lambi and Patrick Theodore are but im not sure how much playing time they’ll get. There’s also the chance that Anthony Proia, James Meyer and Rocky Visconte will spend a fair chunk of the year with the youth squad.

Likely Brisbane Roar National Youth League Line-up:

*Including fringe 1st teamers.

The squad on the whole looks to be a decent one once again capable of matching or bettering last seasons 2nd place finish to Central Coast Mariners- however im surprised not to see key contributors like Alastair Quinn, Kenneth Dougall, Chris Bush or Matthew Thurtell in this years squad.

Brisbane Roar 2012-13 National Youth League home schedule:
