Report: Murray set to sign.Posted: September 10, 2013
Via Mike Cockerill: Brisbane Roar are reportedly set to announce the signing of Brisbane City striker Antonio Murray as apart of the squad for the upcoming season. The 28 year old Englishman has been on fire in the NPL Queensland this season finding the net 27 times this season, earning him the competitions golden boot.
Murray has seen some time in the Roar shirt already this pre-season, playing as a trialist in the Lions, Strikers and Albany Creek games, while playing well upfront for this current club Brisbane City against the Roar.
Murray started out his career in his native England coming through the Ipswich Town system before moving on to Scottish Premier League side Hibernian. Stints in non-league football with Histon –twice-, Chelmsford City and Cambridge United followed before Murray headed for Brisbane signing for the Newmarket club in 2011 where he has scored 59 goals in 54 appearances.
Murray’s CV isn’t the most enticing, however he has been heavily scouted and done well for the Roar in the pre-season. It’s also worth keeping in mind that it’s a similar route taken by current captain Matt Smith who moved from non-league in England to become a Socceroo via Brisbane Strikers, NQ Fury and the Roar.
It’s also without question a position of need with just Berisha in the squad as a recognised striker. Young Kwame Yeboah did reasonably well against the Mariners at the weekend, but he’s better utilised in wider areas. Fellow youngsters Brandon Borello and Patrick Theodore are also options, but they’re not ready for the A-League yet imo, and as we saw last season Henrique isn’t the answer either.
Brisbane currently have 19 players signed on to the senior roster, needing to sign at least one more to meet the competitions minnum requirement of 20. They also have one free foreign spot available to work with.
