Murray, Danning and Current RosterPosted: September 16, 2013
Via Marco Monteverde: Brisbane boss Mike Mulvey still wants to sign English striker Antonio Murray from NPL side Brisbane City, however salary cap constraints stand in the way. The striker –who we wrote about last week- had himself a stellar season in the local leagues scoring 27 goals this season.
Despite the managers desire to sign the play, Roar General Manager Sean Dobson says that he wants to save the clubs 5th and final visa spot for an emergency. Dobson also went on to say that despite previous reports, Kofi Danning will be apart of the clubs playing roster for the upcoming season despite the fact he’s highly unlikely to play a single minute of football this season.
The decision to add Danning to the clubs playing roster is certainly a puzzling one, given that he’s a long shot to even make an appearance in the youth league this upcoming season. The decision to save the 5th foreign spot isn’t the worst idea in the world, and they might be able to snap up something in January similar to Sydney last season with Neill and Griffiths, or Brisbane themselves with Nijland, North, Doe and Lustica. At the very least with Danning and Lambadaridis out for the year, they could even offer Murray an injury replacement deal.
Brisbane’s roster now sits at 20 which is the minimum going into the season, they can however add another 3 players if they choose. They have one visa spot open to their use, in addition to a 3rd full time NYL spot. There’s a chance that one of Brandon Borrello, Pat Theodore or Lachlan Jackson have taken that spot, but nothing has been confirmed yet. They also should have the possibility to sign either an injury replacement for both Lambadaridis and Danning, along with a 10 game guest player contract if they choose.
