Youth Round 1 Preview: Brisbane Roar vs. Melbourne Victory.Posted: October 25, 2013
The Youth League kicks off this weekend and Brisbane start their campaign at home tomorrow afternoon against Melbourne Victory in what should be a stern early season test for the youngsters. Victory comes into this season as the defending champions of the youth league after a solid campaign last season that unearthed some future stars. This however is a new season, and both sides figure to look vastly different this time around.
Brisbane offcourse have a new head coach in Jeff Hopkins, despite that however Brisbane will continue to play in similar vein to the first team. It’s a younger squad this season than most, and there’s little A-League experience in the squad. Despite that, there in quality with Ben Liftin and Brandon Borrello likely to feature tomorrow, along with first team midfielder Julius Doe.
Melbourne have seen the majority of their title winning team elevated into the first team squad which is what the competition is all about, however the majority of them will feature at various times throughout the season. Former Roar striker Anthony Proia – who was let go by Mulvey in January- will no doubt be looking to prove a point against his former side in his Victory debut.

*There’s a little bit of guess work here in relation to the first team players available. For Brisbane I’ve included only Doe because the rest of the squad is either injured, or in Melbourne for the A-League game tonight. For Melbourne I’ve included some of the younger 1st team players who were left off the squad list announced yesterday. I’ve also added a few more for them given they have only 11 NYL players from what I can tell. For Melbourne I’ve added: Rashid Mahazi, Francesco Stella, Jesse Makarounas, Jonathan Bru and Jordan Brown.
