Report: Donachie signs on through 2017Posted: November 21, 2013
Via Marco: Reports today suggest that emerging young Brisbane defender James Donachie has extended his contract with Brisbane through until 2017. The report comes on the back of the news that the defender will be dropped to the bench for tomorrow nights game against the Wanderers, Brisbane themselves have yet to confirm the deal.
Donachie, 20, has made two appearances this season next to Matt Smith when North was recently injured and playing in the midfield, including last weekend against Newcastle. All up the Brisbane born, former Rochedale Rovers junior has made 19 senior appearances and prove to be a solid partner for both Matt Smith and latterly Jade North last season as Brisbane made a late push to retain their championship.
The deal is obviously a huge boost for Brisbane given the reports just last weekend that while Donachie was happy at the Roar, however if playing time dried up he may seek opportunities elsewhere. How much those comments have played in this reported deal is anyone’s guess given he did have 18 months remaining on his deal. There is no question however that with Brisbane’s aging central defensive pairing (both are 31) and having a young defender who featured in the recent u/20 World Cup as a medium to long term answer at the position is a big boost.
