Petratos, Stefanutto sticking around for another seasonPosted: January 10, 2014
Over the past 24 hours or so, Brisbane Roar have confirmed the re-signing of duo Shane Stefanutto and Dimitri Petratos. Dimitri will stick around through the 2015-16 season, while Stefanutto will play on for one more season. Today we’ll take a look at their seasons to date, what they may bring in the future and what it may mean moving forward.
Starting with Petratos, Dimitri has done a fantastic job in the starting line-up in recent weeks out on the right hand side cutting inside contributing 4 goals in the last two matches. When he arrived it was seen almost as a depth signing in the attacking third, however as we enter the second half of the season he’s become a part of the starting line-up and is contributing to a side top of the table. All up he’s made 11 appearances to date -4 starts- and I think he’ll be in line for a lot more starts in future weeks.
Shane on the other hand has had an injury disrupted season so far missing the clubs past 10 matches as the team has moved clear at the top of the table. Before the injury however, Shane wasplaying very well down the left hand side and I think he’s still got something to offer the side. I saw someone on Twitter mention today and I agree that having depth like Shane and Corey Brown at left back is a massive luxury compared to what some clubs have. Not that decisions should be made on this basis, but it also gives him the chance to reach the 100 game milestone at the club.
I’ve seen it mentioned in recent days that these two signings are a sign that Berisha is leaving at the end of the season, and im not sure that’s the case. Regardless of Berisha’s decision, there was a need for another player in the defensive third and preferably a left footer, and also another option in the front third- both of which have been filled well. It’s also clear that a portion of the clubs budget will have been put aside for a #9, wether that’s Berisha or not remains unclear.
The major need area’s now a back-up goal-keeper and also a striker to lead the line. Obviously Berisha and Acton are in those roles now and I don’t think anyone would be disappointed if they were to be retained in those roles. The only other player who is out of contract at the end of the season is Diogo Ferreira, and you could make a good case for retaining him as well. There is also Kofi Danning, however a decision on Kofi would likely be made at the end of the season, and it’s impossible to gauge at this stage given his injury situation.
