Round 14 Match Preview: Brisbane Roar. Adelaide UnitedPosted: January 10, 2014
Last week Brisbane put in what was arguably the most complete performance of the season down in Melbourne last week, the challenge now is to repeat and better it this week. With Corey Brown and James Donachie away on national team duty Brisbane have some issues, however Besart Berisha and Shane Stefanutto are retuning- but will they play?
I think Mulvey’s said in the press the last few days that Ferreira will retain his place at Left back and that’s fair enough as he did pretty well last week. If the game is in hand I wouldn’t be surprised if Shane got a bit of time off the bench, and I also wouldn’t be surprised if he then backed up for an hour in the youth league on Sunday. Long term I think Stefanutto will win back his spot as we head towards the end of the season, it may take him a couple of weeks though.
Berisha is an interesting case and it’s also a tough call on Mulvey’s part. He seems likely to stick with the false 9 system again this week, which is fair enough given we’ve scored 5 and 3 in the last two games, but it then means there’s no natural place for your top scorer. I think Henrique will keep his starting spot despite being solid if not spectacular last week, purely because he’s a better fit for the system. No doubt Berisha will get some time though.
Expected Brisbane XI: Theo, Franjic, North, Smith, Ferreira, Miller, Brattan, McKay, Petratos, Henrique Broich.
Substitutes: Acton, Hingert, Stefanutto, Clut, Berisha.
The Reds picked up a point at home last week against Sydney, however they have reason to be disappointed with the result given they were both a man up and a goal up with 15 minutes to play. They’ve definitely got some injury issues at the moment with Malik, Djite, Cirio Ferreira, Carrusca and Barker Daish all out this weekend. In addition to that new signing Ryan Griffiths is only fit enough to start on the bench. The situation is so bad infact that they’ve had to recall young Jordan Elsey who had just gone out on loan to Gombau’s old club in Hong Kong. Selection wise, it looks like Gombau is going to have to play full-back Daniel Bowles or Michael Zullo in the front third.
Expected Adelaide XI:
Galekovic, Elrich, McKain, Boogaard , Zullo, Watson, Isaias, Lustica, Bowles, Mabil, Jeronimo.
Substitutes: Izzo, Elsey, Costa, Konstandopoulos, Griffiths
So Far this season:
Adelaide United (1) Malik 7’
Brisbane Roar (2) Berisha 21’ P.K, 72’
I thought we played pretty well against Adelaide last time we met them in the first meeting this season, especially when Franjic shifted from a central role wide right. He’ll be starting in a wider area tomorrow and im expecting him to get forward a lot. The other thing is the midfield seems to have clicked now which it hadn’t in the last meeting. They try and play a similar style to us, but I think we’re a step or two ahead of them at the moment. Berisha returned from injury in that game as well, with a brace, a repeat would be nice.
There’s a chance of a shower tomorrow, but it should be a good evening for football with conditions similar to today. If you cant make it to the game, you can catch it live on Fox Sports and on ABC Digital Radio and 612 ABC Brisbane.
