Brisbane’s unbeaten start to the 2014-15 National Youth League season has come to an end this afternoon as visiting Melbourne City ran out 3-0 winners at Goodwin Park. The opening half was a largely even contest with both sides having their moments, however it would be the visitors that took the lead right on half-time. Matt Acton made a fantastic save, however City’s Andy Kecojevic was first to the rebound and headed home to open the scoring.
City began to get on top during the second half and doubled their lead when Stefan Mauk was played through in the 67th minute, and they made sure of the points when Andrew Mullett headed home at the back post in the 74th. Brisbane tried to push forward for a goal and substitute Luke Pavlou had a shot blocked late on- but ultimately the Roar couldn’t create the goal scoring chances required to win the game.
Perhaps with one eye on Friday’s trip to Newcastle, both Devante Clut and Daniel Bowles were substituted on the hour mark- both had solid but unspectacular games with the senior coaching staff watching on. Another who will be in the matchday squad on Friday night will be Matt Acton, and he made two or three impressive saves to keep the score at 3-0. It’s unlikely that he’ll get the nod over Young, but he did well today.
Brisbane Roar youth are also in Newcastle next weekend, and they’ll be looking to continue what has been a promising start to the new NYL season on Saturday afternoon at Rockwell Automation Park. For those in Newcastle over the long weekend- kick-off in that game is set down for 5.00pm local time.
