Report: Brisbane to play VillarealPosted: April 10, 2015
It’s yet to be officially confirmed, but Brisbane could be set for a showdown with one of the best teams in Spain with reports emerging today that Villarreal are heading to Australia at the conclusion of their season.
Reports first emerged back in February that a Spanish side was set to tour Australia, but with no follow up reports it seemed to be off the table. Today however reports in Adelaide confirmed the game in the South Australian captain, while also mentioning a game in Queensland on Wednesday June 3.
Should the fixture go ahead on that date, the game would take place a week after the second leg of a potential Round of 16 AFC Champions League tie, however that figures to be an unlikely scenario at this point. The timing does make it difficult to have the mandatory 4 week break at the end of the season, and then return to pre-season and be ready to play Liverpool on July 17.
Villarreal currently sit sixth in La Liga, occupying a Europa League spot, boast players such as Mexican brothers Giovanni and Jonathan Dos Santos, and Costa Rican striker Joel Campbell -on loan from Arsenal- amongst others in their squad.
Villarreal, who will play two games in Australia as part of the LFP World Challenge, will also take on Adelaide United at Hindmarsh on May 29th. If it is confirmed, the game will be Brisbane’s second international opponent of the off-season, after they secured a high profile friendly against Liverpool in July.
