John Aloisi has made his first signing as Brisbane Roar boss, bringing in Perth Glory striker Jamie Maclaren on a two year contract to lead the line.

Maclaren, 20, spent the last two seasons in the west with Perth Glory scoring 11 goals in 38 games, including an impressive nine last year, primarily coming off the bench backing up Andy Keogh.

The Melbourne born striker also has experience overseas prior to his spell in Perth, spending three years over in England as part of the Blackburn Rovers academy where he learned his trade before returning to Australia in search of game time.

Maclaren has also been a part of the Australian u/20 side in recent years and the striker projects to be a part of the Olyroos side who will be attempting to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics over the next 12 months.

Here with the Roar, Maclaren figures to be fighting with the likes of Jean Carlos Solórzano, Dimitri Petratos, Henrique, Brandon Borrello and Shannon Brady for playing time in the front third, either in one of the wider positions, or more likely through the middle as a central striker.

On the whole this is a surprising move from the Roar given their reported financial dramas of recent times, but as a fit he’s a really solid signing. Young enough to have some upside still going forward along with re-sale value, while also having the ability to make a solid contribution to the side from here on.

Maclaren is already in Brisbane by the looks of things and will join up with pre-season training tomorrow, while he figures to be in contention for playing time in the first game of the pre-season against Liverpool in a couple of weeks time.

The signing of Maclaren takes the Roar to 20 first team contracted players, with four of the five visa spots taken up in addition to the two marquee spots. That means there’s a maximum of three spots left in the squad, in addition to two FY NYL player spots available. You’d think the only other signing to come now would be a utility midfield type, but we’ll have to wait and see on that.

Brisbane Roar squad 2015-16 as of July 5, 2015:
Goalkeepers- Michael Theo, Jamie Young.
