Former Players Update- 06/08/2015Posted: August 6, 2015
With the European league’s coming back to life over the next week or so, I thought it was a good time to bring this back once again. Before we get to the tables, there’s been a fair bit of player movement with the former Roar players over the European and Australian closed season
Starting with transfers in Europe, Ben Halloran has moved from Fortuna Dusseldorf to fellow 2.0 Bundesliga side Heideheim. Halloran struggled for game time with Fortuna last season and will no doubt be hoping for more game time to try and force his way back into the National Team set-up.
Elsewhere last season’s foreign strikers have found new homes, with Andrija Kaluderovic moving to Qatari side Al Shahania while Mensur Kurtishi moved from relegated Serie B side Varese to fellow Serie C side Matera. Another former Roar import, Reinaldo, has also moved since the last update, with the Brazilian leaving his homeland to join Sime Derby in the Malaysian Super League while Isaka Cernak departed the A-League to join SuperSport United in South Africa.
Finally overseas, two former academy players have made moves, with Kenneth Dougall moving from Dutch Eerste side Telstar to top flight side Sparta Rotterdam, while Ross Archibald has departed Australia to peruse an opportunity in Germany with Fortuna Dusseldorf. The 2 time NYL player of the year here in Brisbane, left the Roar 2 years ago and made his A-League debut last year for Melbourne City.
Tommy Oar, who left FC Utrecht when his contract expired in July remains without a club at the current time.
In Australia, a number of former Roar players have returned to the A-League, with Michael Zullo and Ivan Franjic joining Melbourne City, while another former Roar player at City has left the club with Andrew Redmayne joining the Wanderers. Joining Redmayne in Western Sydney is Mitch Nichols, who returns to Australia on a permanent basis from Cerezo Osaka after a loan spell with Perth last year while one of last year’s breakout youngsters, Lachlan Jackson, has departed the Roar for Newcastle in the chase for first team football.
In the tier below the A-League, Kofi Danning latched on with Oakleigh Cannons in NPL Victoria after being let go by the Roar, while foundation player Massimo Murdocca has signed with Avondale in the off-season after being let go by City. In NSW Anthony Proia has moved from Sydney United 58 to South Coast Wolves in the NSW Premier League.
Two other quick links before we get to the tables, the first of which is a Fairfax interview with former captain Matt Smith about his adventure in Thailand. The interview covers everything that lead the English born defender to Thailand, from his time in the state league’s here in Queensland to his time with the Roar. You can read it here.
Another interview with a former Roar player, this time from 442 in Singapore with Issey Nakajima- Farran about his journey in football from Japan to Canada, Australia and now Malaysia. The story can be found here.
