Roar trio named in Olyroos

**The following is a re-post of something I posted over at Football Central- originally dated 28/08/15

in some good news coming out if Brisbane, three of Brisbane’s brightest young talents have been called up to represent the Australian U23 side next month in their two match tour of Europe.

James Donachie, Brandon Borrello and Jamie Maclaren have been picked by Olyroos boss Aurelio Vidmar to take on the Turkey u/22 side on September 4th in Istanbul, before travelling to Skopje to take on FYR Macedonia u/22 three days later.

The two games are being used to prepare the side for next years AFC u/23 Championships in Qatar, which double as the qualifiers for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The Australian’s breezed past Myanmar, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong in the qualifiers but will face much stiffer tests in the tournament proper which gets underway in mid-January.

In order for the Olyroos to qualify for next year’s Olympics, they will need to be one of the top three finishers in the tournament.

While three of Brisbane’s best youngsters did make the squad, another missed out with Devante Clut surprisingly left out of the 23 man squad.

While the trio will miss some of the Roar’s pre-season campaign, they should all be back on deck for the clubs next pre-season hit-out against Newcastle Jets at Cleveland Showgrounds on September 12th.

With 2018 World Cup Qualifiers and the Rio 2016 qualifying campaign underway, this figures to be the first of many interruptions for A-League sides over the upcoming season.

For the Roar, this could see them without many of their young players for the entire month of January, with a preparation camp scheduled before the AFC u/23 Championships which run from Jan 12-30.

On the World Cup Qualifiers front, marquee player and club captain Matt McKay will almost certainly miss the Round 1 clash away to Western Sydney if he’s selected for the October trip to Jordan. There are four other 2018 qualifiers matches scheduled for the 2015-16 season.
