Jerome Polenz leaves BrisbanePosted: August 15, 2016
After making just the one appearance last season, rumours of his departure have been ever-present all off-season and today it was confirmed that Jerome Polenz has left Brisbane Roar.
Polenz, 29, joined Brisbane in the 2015 January transfer window on a two and a half year contract to help plug the then problematic right back spot following the departure of Ivan Franjic the previous August.
Despite playing a role in the sides run to the finals that season, he was left on the outer last season by John Aloisi as Jack Hingert cemented himself as the teams first choice right back going forward.
Jerome made just the one appearance last season– the round 3 loss against Wellington- and has been frozen out of the side since then, and it’s perhaps telling that when Hingert was suspended in round 25.
Since the season ended there has been continuous speculation over his future with reports that the German was told his services weren’t required and that he had been training apart from the rest of the group.
Despite all of that speculation however it wasn’t until today that Polenz and Brisbane Roar parted ways.
Player number– 107
Debut– Season 10, Round 15 (Wellington H)
Games– 11 (1)
The departure of Polenz leaves Brisbane with to 21 players contracted and leaves Aloisi with three visa spots open to bolster the squad between now and the round 1 clash against Melbourne Victory. The squad could also be back to the league mandated minimum of 20 depending on how Nicholas D’Agostino going in his trial period with Belgian side Genk.
In terms of the right back position there is now a gap with Jack Hingert the only recognised right back on the roster. Daniel Bowles has played plenty of right back in his time in the A-League however with so much uncertainty at the heart of defence it’s likely that he’ll be required in the centre.
Youngster Mark Rodic, whose been part of the youth set-up for the past year is the most likely candidate to be promoted to the A-League should the Roar opt to add someone to the squad as cover for Hingert though that’s purely my speculation.
Current Brisbane Roar squad as at August 6th 2016
