Former Player Wrap- 17/10/2016Posted: October 17, 2016
The former players wrap was put on hold due to the recent international break and the 2016-17 Season Preview series and there’s been a bunch of things happen since the last update. Here’s a wrap of the biggest events over the past three weeks, followed by the tables.
Halloran scores in Germany
Starting this week, Ben Halloran has scored his first goal of the 2016-17 season over the weekend, opening the scoring in the 14th minute of FC Heideheim’s win over Greuther Furth. Sadly I cant find any video footage of the goal or the match.
Additionally Devante Clut, Alex Brosque and Luke Brattan all found the back of the net in round two of the A-League.
Paartalu heads to Qatar
A move which was heavily rumoured in the days following the last update has now come to fruition, with Erik Paartalu swapping Korean side Jeonbuk for Al Kharitiyath in the Qatari Stars League. While 2016 has been a good one for Jeonbuk it was a disappointing time for Erik, with the towering midfielder making just the two appearances following his move from Melbourne City. Paartalu made his debut for his new side at the weekend, coming on as a late substitute.
Maclaren departs Stirling
Stuart Maclaren left Stirling Albion following a 4-0 loss to Elgin which was the teams’ last fixture before the recent international bank. Stirling won just one game out of seven before the ex Brisbane defender was dismissed.
Following the passing of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej last week, the remainder of the 2016 Thai Premier League season has been abandoned. Bangkok Glass, lead by former Brisbane captain Matt Smith were sitting in third position with three games remaining in the season. Smith made 31 appearances for Bangkok this season.
The season is also over for Liam Miller, who was part of the Wilmington Hammerheads in the 2016 USL season with Wilmington finishing just outside the Eastern Conference playoffs in 9th position. Miller scored once in 25 times this season for his new club following his move from Cork City in his native Ireland.
Finally, it was also the last round of the Lithuanian A Lyga, with Andrija Kaluderovic and his Zalgiris teammates secured the Championship by 8 points. Since arriving in midseason, Kaluderovic has been a revelation with 12 goals in just 13 games to help his side to the title.
Local League Transfers
Royce Brownlie’s switch from NPL side Moreton Bay to BPL side Albany Creek Excelsior is the biggest news from the second tier amongst the former Roar players. Meanwhile Griffin McMaster has swapped Bulleen Lions for Northcote City down in Victoria.
In terms of off-field transfers, former Young Roar coach Josh McCloughan has been announced as a Technical Advisor for Capital League 1 side Wolves FC.
