2016-17 Young Roar Squad confirmedPosted: October 31, 2016
At half time of yesterday’s A-League clash between Brisbane and Perth, the squads for both the W-League and the Young Roar were announced ahead of the club photo which took place after the game.
We’ve already covered the announcement of the W-League squad in recent weeks, although there is a bit of news here with Tameka Butt confirmed as a member of the squad moving forward.
Butt had previously not been mentioned as part of the side which lead many to think that Brisbane’s all time top scorer in the W-League would be moving on, but yesterdays news means that another foundation member of the Roar women’s setup remains.
Onto the Young Roar squad which will compete in the upcoming National Youth League and the 2017 NPL Queensland to follow, and the squad looks very similar to that of last season.
Standout contributors over the last 12 months such as Cameron Crestani, Jesse Daley, Joseph Champness and Jayden Prasad all return, and are amongst 17 players to be carried over from the 2016 NPL Queensland campaign.
The sole addition to the group is Western Pride attacker Joseph Duckworth, whose 11 goals over the 2016 NPL season saw the youngster earn a place in the PS4 Player Pathway Award which saw Duckworth join 23 others in a trial to win a youth deal with Sydney FC.
Duckworth was ultimately overlooked by the Sky Blues and after a standout showing against the Roar in pre-season for the NPL u-23 side, he was added to the youth setup.
In terms of absentee’s, the most notable is left back Matthew Schmidt, who was seemingly on the cusp of a first team debut at the end of the 2014-15 season before a long term knee injury curtailed his plans.
Dylan Wenzel-Halls and Danny Kim are amongst the others who featured in the NPL but not announced yesterday, although it’s possible they have been retained and classed as replacement platers for the NYL.
2016-17 Young Roar squad
Goalkeepers- Tomislav Bilic, Andre Jannese.
Defenders- Cameron Crestani, Hayden McHenery, Aaron Reardon, Mark Rodic.
Midfielders- Joe Caletti, Jesse Daley, Daniel Driver, Dane Ingham, Nathan Konstandopoulos, Daniel Leck, Nicholas Panetta, Adam Sawyer.
Forwards- Joseph Champness, Joseph Duckworth, Jayden Prasad, Harrison Sawyer.
When adding in fringe first team players such as Kye Rowles, Connor O’Toole, Shannon Brady and Nicholas D’Agostino the squad looks to be a very strong one and potentially capable of winning the Conference A title and making it to the Grand Final.
The 2016-17 Youth League season begins with a home game against Melbourne Victory on November 12th at Spencer Park, with the Grand Final scheduled for January 29th.
Update: Daniel Leck is also returning to the Young Roar set-up for the 2016-17 season, making it 17 players carried over from the previous campaign.
